Here are the top ten automobile insurance companies as rated by J. D. Power and Associations for 2011. Each company has a score based on a 1,000-point rating scale:
1.) Amica Mutual. For the 12th year in a row, Amica is the top company is customer satisfaction nationwide. With a score of 843, Amica outperforms every other company in the country, with the exception of USAA. USAA is not included in the J. D. Power survey because it is only available to select customers.
2.) Erie Insurance. With a score of 825, Erie Insurance is just behind Amica in overall customer satisfaction. Erie is a smaller company and has remained somewhat regional.
3.) Shelter. The Shelter Company, offering a variety of insurance products, comes in third with a 816.
4.) Auto-Owners Insurance. Just behind Shelter is Auto-Owners, with a score of 815. Auto-Owners is a national company, although not as well known as some of the “Big Five.”
5.) Ameriprise. With a score of 804, Ameriprise ties with State Farm for fifth place. Ameriprise is a smaller company which specializes in great customer service.
6.) State Farm. The nation’s largest insurer is also the only one of the “Big Five” to make it to the “Top Five.” Technically tied with Ameriprise, State Farm’s score of 804 makes it one of the highest-rated companies in the nation, and the highest-rated company of all the large insurers.
7.) GEICO. The next-rated company, with a score of 797, is another of the “Big Five” and one of the country’s favorite insurers. GEICO, which began as “Government Employees Insurance Company,” now does business with any types of customers.
8.) State Auto. At #8, State Auto is another less-well-known company which has nevertheless done business for many years across the country. Its score of 792 keeps it in the top 10 in customer satisfaction.
9.) American Family. With a 791, American Family earns the #9 spot of customer favorites. Offering a variety of types of insurance, American Family is yet another small company which seems to meet customer service needs easily.
10.) Alfa Insurance. Rounding out the top 10 is Alfa Insurance, with a score of 787. Alfa has been doing business across the country for many years, and focuses on customer service and help.
In order to get the right insurance for yourself, however, you cannot only rely on customer service ratings or rankings in a scale. You must also speak with agents and explore company’s websites to find out if that company is right for you.
