A: The good news is that the auto insurance industry is much cleaner than most people think. Most of the perceived problems in the industry are a result of confusion on the part of customers and a poor job of educating consumers by the insurers.
However, there are definitely a number of things that you can do to ensure that you don't get caught up in a scam. Many scams simply are the result of insurance companies promising rates that are too good to be true, and then changing their rates several months into the policy, citing some sort of error.
- Make sure your insurance company or agent is licensed by your state. All states require that insurance companies and agents to be licensed.
- Shop around. If an offer looks too good to be true, it probably is. Ask insurance companies about each other, and ask them about another company's lower rate
- Never sign any blank forms, and make sure that you have a full copy of your insurance policy to ensure that you are receiving the proper coverages.
- Make sure that your insurance company can answer any and all questions that you have about your policy.
- Do not pay in cash (although it sounds obvious, you'd be suprised how many people get caught with this one).
We wish you the best of luck in searching for the provider that is right for you!
